The Angry Birds are back in the sequel to the biggest mobile game of all time! Angry Birds 2 starts a new era of slingshot gameplay with super stunning graphics, challenging multi-stage levels, scheming boss pigs and even more destruction.
After seven(!) bird-flinging sequels, Rovio has finally counted to two with it. Such a major milestone calls for big new ideas to reinvigorate the fundamentally great idea of slingshotting cartoon birds at structurally unsound forts... but disappointingly, I can't call the biggest of the changes to gameplay and the payment model improvements. Instead, they're significant steps backward for the massively popular series. There’s still plenty of silly fun to be had in leveling piggy structures with your bird bombardment, but it is missing key parts of what made previous games so universally compelling to gamers both hardcore and casual, young and old.

This randomness did keep me on my toes with unpredictable, fresh challenges, but it also turns the experience into a more mindless, action-oriented experience where you simply fling birds and watch the ensuing destruction. Gone is any aspect of unraveling a level’s design to figure out a perfect three-star strategy. During one attempt a stage might feature a pig that floats away via a balloon, requiring you to spend a second bird to pop him. On the next attempt, the same pig might stay put. A stage can be constructed of easily breakable ice the first time, and sturdy stone the next - and you might not have the appropriate bird to penetrate it either time. This randomness can be maddening when combined with it’s limited lives and the way they're tied to time-outs.

The random stages and limited lives don’t take away from this game’s core tension, either. It's still full of nervous moments where you have one bird remaining, and have to thread a perfect shot to hit a single elusive pig. It still feels great to pull that off. In fact, several little improvements make the central act of bird launching feel better than ever: running at 60fps gives all the destruction an appreciated smoothness; explosion effects are flashier, with debris and pigs flying towards the screen itself; and everything is animated as lavishly as adorable limbless pigs and birds can be - all the production values feel noticeably higher, in fact.

In practice, lala’s limited lives and ever-shifting stages don’t completely ruin the fun of launching birds at pigs. It’s still fun to pop in, cause some destruction, and then go about your day. But it’s a more superficial kind of fun - a pale shadow of what game can provide when at its best. It may look dramatically better than ever, but the legendary staying power of the original game just isn’t there in the sequel.
